Slow Home Gallery: With graphic designer Shweta Malhotra
Here’s introducing the ‘Slow Home Gallery’. As the name suggests, this column will bring you objects and corners of some creative homes we come across. The first one is graphic designer Shweta Malhotra’s rental in Bandra, Mumbai. She moved to this home about three years back. “It happened completely by chance, as a friend of mine was leaving the house and asked me if I wanted to move there. I’d always wanted to live in Bandra as I often hung out here growing up. The house was completely up my alley - minimal, white, lots of natural light, large windows, and well done up as a base for me to build on,” says Shweta.
“Since it’s a small 1bhk, I really wanted some sense of space, so I was very conscious of everything I brought in the house. I made sure that everything fits in seamlessly and takes up minimal space. For example, I got the dining table custom-made for two people based on the space available,” she adds.
She evolved her home slowly with time. Her graphic design style is reflected clearly in every part of her home - it’s graphic, minimal, bold, contemporary, with design elements and a dash of colour everywhere. And lots of polka dots that Shweta is a particular fan of - an ode to her favourite artist Yayoi Kusama. The polka dots can be found in the home furnishings, dinnerware, and many other small knick-knacks all over the house.
Without further ado, here’s our first Slow Home Gallery featuring Shweta’s house. All photographs by us, except for the one where Shweta is enjoying her morning tea surrounded by polks dots! That image is courtesy Saphed.
